Kurt Atterberg
1887-1974

Kurt Atterberg was a composer from Sweden, following in the footsteps of Berwald, Stenhammar, and Alfvén, composers we have already covered on the Oozy Channel Keep.

As an aside, I marvel at the dates of Atterberg. He not only experienced the turn of the century as a young one, but lived through a great majority of the 20th Century as well. Think of the changes in humanity he witnessed, whether they were technological or cultural.

While Atterberg lived well into the 20th Century, his style is generally considered Neo-Romantic, and probably unpopularly so bearing in mind he composed through the 1950s and into the 60s.

Atterberg has done particularly well on recordings, especially from CPO, although Chandos, Marco Polo, and BIS have dedicated some time to him as well. A complete cycle of symphonies, concertos, and string quartets have been issued by CPO, and I am sure there are more. I am most familiar with the composer's orchestral music where, unfortunately, not much has been done to put his major choral, vocal music, and stage music onto record.

But, I look forward to exploring the music of Kurt Atterberg once again.
