Beethoven: Missa Solemnis

CD cover of the Missa Solemnis by Beethoven from James Levine and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra on DGG

Ludwig van Beethoven's Missa Solemnis in D Major is often described as 'admired for its profundity rather than loved for its music'. I can understand this viewpoint, as the work is quite lengthy as far as Mass settings go. Yet, I think I have more than a mere appreciation for the composer's Missa Solemnis, enjoying many facets of its five movements.

James Levine leads a broad reading of the Mass, although it comes in some minutes shorter than my belovèd Karajan recording from 1966. Levine gives in to the operatic aspects of the work, compounded by the starry lineup of vocal soloists on hand. Plácido Domingo, in particular, seems tasked by Beethoven's high-flying ranges, requiring the tenor to sing everything at top volume and with a tense vocal quality. Cheryl Studer, Jessye Norman, and Kurt Moll are somewhat better behaved, but are still large voices.

For this performance, the Leipzig Radio Choir combines with the Swedish Radio Chorus and the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir. The extra numbers help, as this is a solid symphonic choral sound, one with fine ensemble work and plenty of choral impact. Their vibrato is well controlled too, at least compared to groups like the Vienna Singverein, where one tires of the wide oscillations of the chorus.

If you enjoy your Beethoven Missa Solemnis big and grand, it doesn't get much bigger and grander than this recording. At around 83 minutes in length, this is far from Gardiner's 71-minute period approach, yet does not reach the 90-minute mark loved by Giulini fans.

I can't promise everyone will love Beethoven's Missa Solemnis; for many, it takes a great many listens to come to terms with its length and many varied musical sections.
