Volume 3 of Anderson's Amuse-Bouche

I am finding less to say about each entry in Naxos' Leroy Anderson series, yet no less superlatives.

It is not a bad thing, but Anderson's positive attributes remain the same in each volume.

I really like the Harvard Sketches. It is a small suite dedicated to sounds around the University. The opening bell sequence is terrific.

Aside from the many ingenious miniatures, some well known, others less so, the Suite of Carols for brass is included. It may be Christmas in July, but I will enjoy taking these out in December even more.

A review from 2014

Volume 3 of Naxos’ series on Leroy Anderson’s orchestral miniatures, brilliantly continues apace.

More melodic earworms, more solo instrument features, more inventive orchestrations, more attractive picture-postcard musical landscapes await listeners willing to invest in Anderson’s orchestral miniature gems.

Two larger items are featured on this third volume. Harvard Sketches is a wonderful musical tribute to the Ivy-league school, where the opening ‘bells’ really capture the mythical spirit of the revered University. The 12-minute Suite of Carols, here for brass only, are beautifully arranged carols for the Yuletide, aside the well-worn orchestral Sleigh Ride.

It is hard not to love this music from Leroy Anderson, as they exhibit high spirits, exotic styles, and colourful orchestrations.

More wonderfulness from Leroy Anderson.

I know a lot of these pieces, and they remain inventive little gems.

As with the previous volumes, it is the ones I don't know which are most interesting, particularly the longer items.
