Leroy Anderson

Leroy Anderson
1908-1975

If in the course of our lives, we are only known for one thing, most would be gratified. If Leroy Anderson was only known for Sleigh Ride, I would think that would be enough for any one person.

In his case, Leroy Anderson is well known for a handful of short, orchestral gems, perhaps even two handfuls which are easily recognizable at first hearing.

Anderson was a master of the light orchestral miniature. If such a title seems beneath serious music listening, alongside his stunning popularity on the Hit Parade, realize the composer was a meticulous craftsman and an excellent orchestrator worth serious consideration.

His music ranges from witty to nostalgic, with every style in between. Some have a hint of jazz, while others are full of lush Romanticisms. Many of Anderson's miniatures give spotlight to orchestral sections or soloists, driving home Norman Rockwell-esque picture-postcard musical visualizations.

For the centenary of Leroy Anderson's birth, Naxos released five volumes of his orchestral music. Many of the volumes are filled with the familiar, but there are rarities and recorded premieres as well.

Of course, Anderson was a conductor himself, and so there are collections of him leading his own music, which may be the first place to stop and hear his music. In some cases, they are in scrappier sound, but show a spirited energy much different from the Naxos set, which showcases Golden Age orchestral voluptuousness. Anderson was also championed by Arthur Fiedler with the Boston Pops, and many of the composer's arrangements can be heard with that conductor on RCA. Don't forget Frederick Fennell and his Eastman group too; much to savor their as well.
