Victor Herbert

Victor Herbert
1859-1924

Herbert was a German émigrée to the US. His main instrument was the cello and he played for major orchestras, most famously for The Met.

Herbert is probably best known for his operettas, but I have no idea if they are even performed anymore.

I saw Babes in Toyland a few years ago, but the 1961 film version. Knowing Disney, I am sure it is nothing like the original, although I believe the music was based on Victor Herbert's originals. From this, I probably know the instrumental March of the Toys the best.

In the concert hall, he has a number of orchestral and concertante works to his name. Of these, his cello concertos are probably the most familiar.
