Luigi Cherubini

Luigi Cherubini
1760-1842

Cherubini is a late-Classical Era composer, representing a bridge from one musical era into the next. Like Johann Nepomuk Hummel, whom I recently surveyed, eventually Cherubini's music fell out of favor with audiences in lieu of new musical trends.

His name is obviously Italian, and while Cherubini was born and received his musical education in Italy, he spent most of his life and career in France.

Cherubini's career during this time was split between serving royalty and the uprising of the French Revolution.

Cherubini's fame lays mostly with his operas, but I will probably start by covering his sacred music, and what little there is of his orchestral music.

Who knows though, Médée might soon be in my future. As I understand it, Maria Callas rules the roost.
